Pre-seed funding is the earliest stage of startup financing, typically raised before a company has a fully developed product, proven business model, or significant revenue.
At this stage, capital is mainly used to transform an idea into a minimum viable product (MVP), hire a small team, and test early assumptions about the market.
Unlike later rounds, pre-seed money often comes from personal savings, friends and family, angel investors, or specialized pre-seed venture funds.
Pre-seed funding became more common over the past decade as starting a company has become cheaper, but competition for venture capital has grown. Today, it serves as a vital launchpad: giving founders the time and resources to validate ideas before pursuing larger seed or Series A rounds.
Pre-seed checks typically range from $100,000 to $1 million, depending on the sector and geography.
A notable example is Canva, the design platform now valued in the billions. Before it became a global unicorn, Canva secured a modest pre-seed round that allowed the founders to build their first prototype and attract early users. That initial traction was critical in convincing larger investors to back them.
Pre-seed funding can determine survival because it extends a startup’s runway to experiment, refine, and prove product–market fit. Without it, many companies burn out before they have the chance to validate their idea.
For founders, a strong pre-seed round is less about the size of the check and more about securing enough time, trust, and momentum to move from concept to scalable business.
